Ask PMI Anything: Could I be the next PMI Board Member?9 Feb 2021
This year, PMI members will elect four leaders to serve on the Board for the 2022-2024 term, and one could be you.
Serving on the Board is a significant commitment, but one that offers a unique experience to help shape our organization as we continue an exciting transformation and embark on a bold new growth strategy.
As I can attest from my own service on the Board, including my current role as Chair, serving as a Director offers countless opportunities, such as:
- Collaborating with a global network of peers and thought leaders
- Playing a key leadership role in shaping the future of the profession and PMI itself
- Strengthening your skills in leadership, strategic thinking, diplomacy and other power skills
- Building your business acumen skills
- And most importantly, helping PMI to increase its impact around the globe
The Board plays a crucial governance role in every major decision impacting PMI, from refreshing the organization’s long-term strategy, to responding to environmental impacts like the COVID-19 pandemic. It addresses risks and opportunities, performs fiduciary oversight and ensures that members are receiving maximum value from the Institute’s product and service offerings.
PMI leadership and the Board value and strive for inclusive representation of volunteer leaders on our Board of Directors that reflects our organization, membership and profession. Our success today and into the future relies on our ability to capitalize on diverse perspectives and points of view resulting from a balance of race, gender, age, experience, industry, skill set, nationality, ethnicity, sexual orientation and other factors deemed relevant. The nomination process fully appreciates, considers and is informed by the value derived from diverse representation.
Just ask some of my colleagues on the Board, who all bring impressive commitment to their service, as well as unique perspectives in representing a range of sectors and industries around the globe. You can hear their reflections in a series of “Straight Talk” interviews available online moderated by PMI President & CEO Sunil Prashara.
“It’s a really wonderful experience. You learn a lot, you can get more educated in governance and strategy, and you can contribute to the organization that we all love very much.”

“I think one of the key learnings and takeaways from the Board is that you really grow as an individual in your thinking. You come in with a point of view and as you listen to the other point of views, you may find yourself shifting and picking up on considerations you may have overlooked.”
Cathy La Tona
PMI Board 2015-2020, 2018 Board Chair
“I think the benefits of being on the Board are a great sense of personal satisfaction—and knowing that you’re helping to direct PMI into the future.”
PMI Board 2008-2013, 2019-2021
2021 Compensation Committee Chair, 2011 Board Chair
Our Call for Nominations is now open until 28 February. If you’re a member in good standing for two years and meet the criteria for knowledge and leadership experience, I urge you to consider how you can personally contribute to the Board, and help us to shape the next chapter of PMI’s history.
