We’re less than a week into 2022, and that means you still have time to make New Year’s resolutions, right? On a professional level, maybe you’re hoping for a promotion or want to steer your career in a different direction. By setting the right goals for yourself now and taking action, you’re all the more likely to deliver impactful projects. PMI’s Interim President & Chief Executive Officer, Mike DePrisco, illustrates how power skills and project management can differentiate your career.

To truly live out the adage, New Year, New You, you need a plan. Sometimes, knowing where to start and identifying the first step toward a goal is most challenging of all. So, if you’re an individual looking to boost your career—a student, entrepreneur, business leader or anyone proactively driving progress—reading this blog is a good first step, because I’ll identify several paths for upskilling this year. Each of these options can stand alone, or can act as powerful enhancers to the popular Project Management Professional (PMP)® or Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® certifications. What’s more, project management is a growing field and the global economy will need 25 million new project professionals by 2030. Here’s how PMI can help provide tailored resources to enhance every step of your career development.

From Soft Skills to Power Skills

What comes to mind when you hear, “soft skills?” Likely personal attributes such as empathy, collaboration, teamwork and problem-solving, right? At PMI, we refer to these “soft skills” as “power skills” because, as more work becomes automated, there’s a higher premium on individuals who can lead teams effectively and think creatively. Let’s take a closer look at some of our offerings that can help take your power skills to the next level.

For Project Management Beginners

Upskilling doesn’t always have to be a big commitment. Our introductory Kickoff course is only 45-minutes and, best of all, free. Even if you aren’t a project professional, Kickoff provides foundational skills and tools to help you collaborate with your teams and work smarter, whether you’re leading your first project, working with a new team or reskilling your organization.

Also, with the emergence of The Project Economy, a global mindset in which work increasingly centers around executing both large and small projects, we anticipate project-based work will continue to increase in the future. So why not learn how to effectively own your projects from start to finish? You’ll engage with interactive, bite-sized content, and walk away with downloadable templates and knowledge to help keep projects on track.

Disciplined Agile®

For Ultimate Freedom to Choose How You Work

Determining the right approach to deliver projects or products is critical. But with hundreds of approaches out there, overwhelmed practitioners tend to cling to one framework, which often does not fit their unique situation. True agility happens when you pair the freedom to choose from the best of agile, lean and traditional sources with the guidance to make better choices. And that’s what we call Disciplined Agile.

Disciplined Agile isn’t a framework, but a toolkit that focuses on the decisions you need to consider as an effective leader, the choices available to you and the trade-offs associated with these options. Organizations that adopt Disciplined Agile go to market sooner, deliver value faster and make their customers happier. We offer several Disciplined Agile courses, for beginners, practitioners, coaches and even value stream consultants, all helping learners hone their ability to adapt to change.

Wicked Problem Solving®

For Solving Tough Problems

Organizations are experiencing complex challenges with no single best answer. And, according to PMI research and the World Economic Forum, complex problem-solving ranks as the single most valuable workplace skill. A culture of visualizing ideas is necessary, and project professionals need the resources to enable them to manage these projects more creatively, collaboratively and effectively. While problem-solving, critical thinking and decision-making may sound like difficult skills to learn, we’ve got you covered with Wicked Problem Solving, a course from technology and design thinking pioneer, Tom Wujec.

More than 10 million people have watched Tom’s TED talks, and he’s partnered with over 100 companies on four continents to help solve unique challenges. Now, it’s your turn to learn from one of the world’s leading problem-solvers. The fun, interactive sessions also leave you with handy reference materials. Curious for a sample? PMI Citizen Developer™

For Building Solutions

Were you aware that 86 percent of IT decision-makers say the biggest challenge to digitally transform their business is too few software developers? A shortage of developers means critical projects and products are delayed or placed on hold, causing missed opportunities to deliver value and impact to customers and stakeholders. Our Citizen Developer offerings can help you bridge the gap, while adding a new tool to your professional toolbox.

With no-code/low-code platforms, individuals can learn to build applications quickly and inexpensively without software development expertise, all while maintaining IT governance and security compliance. For businesses to unlock the full potential of citizen development and deliver on their projects and programs, a system to oversee the environment and mitigate risk is needed. PMI Citizen Developer offers three courses to help meet varying organization needs—for beginners, practitioners and business architects—and can be offered at scale across an organization to ensure employees are creatively customizing and skillfully building applications safely and securely.

If you’re looking to take that next step in your career, I hope you’re inspired to try at least one of these courses in the year ahead—or perhaps you’re motivated to share these trainings with your team. You can also view our complete list of certifications to find continued learning materials for every career stage or join the PMI community to gain access to globally recognized certifications, industry events and webinars, hundreds of free online courses, thought leadership, digital publications and connect with changemakers from across the globe.
